About the Project

Steam is one of the world’s largest digital distribution platforms for PC gaming, providing a marketplace, library, and community features for millions of players. This project is an independent concept redesign that imagines what the next generation of Steam’s experience could look like, across desktop and large-screen devices. The focus is on modernising the interface, improving discoverability of games, and creating a more immersive yet organised browsing and library experience for gamers.

The Challenge

Over time, Steam has grown into a powerful but visually dense platform, with complex navigation, heavy information layouts, and inconsistent visual hierarchy. New users can feel overwhelmed by the store, while existing players may struggle to quickly find relevant content in large personal libraries, events, and community areas. The challenge was to reimagine Steam with a cleaner structure, a more cinematic presentation of games, and clearer pathways for discovery, while still respecting the depth and richness that power users expect.

The Strategy

The redesign strategy began by breaking Steam into a few core journeys: browsing the store, discovering new games, managing the personal library, and tracking game progress and community updates. Each of these flows was simplified with a stronger information hierarchy, so that key actions like wishlisting, adding to cart, or continuing the last-played game are always close and obvious. Visually, the interface leans into large hero artwork, bold typography, and a dark, atmospheric theme that lets game art stand out while keeping controls clean and minimal. Clear navigation rails, consistent card patterns, and contextual surfaces (such as game detail overlays) help users move smoothly between exploring, learning about a title, and purchasing or launching it.

The Results

The final concept presents a Steam experience that feels more cinematic and contemporary, without losing the depth that serious gamers value. Game discovery becomes more engaging through visually rich layouts, curated sections, and focused detail pages that highlight trailers, key features, and reviews in a structured way. Library management is streamlined with clearer status indicators, better organisation of installed and owned titles, and quick access to recent activity, making it easier to jump back into games or explore something new. As a portfolio piece, this project demonstrates skills in large-scale product thinking, UX architecture, UI design for dense content, and designing for a passionate, highly engaged user base.
